Intellectual Development

Our students will learn key academic skills - like reading, writing and math - to encompass the knowledge and processes associated with intellectual development. As learners and meaning-makers, students take subject-specific concepts and content and transform them into a new understanding.

Goals

  • Improve student success in literacy.
  • Improve student success in numeracy.

Literacy at Sandy Hill

At our school, literacy is more than just reading. It's about becoming confident, curious learners who engage with texts in meaningful ways. Take a look at some of the ways that Sandy Hill students are developing their skills in literacy:

Small Group Reading: Students receive instruction in small groups, allowing teachers to meet learners where they are and support their individual growth. These small group lessons focus on deeper comprehension of texts, vocabulary development, and decoding skills.

Learning Phonemic Awareness with Heggerty: Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify, and change the sounds in words. Heggerty lessons help our students to develop the building blocks for learning to read and spell.

Independent Reading: Students are encouraged to explore books that spark their interests during independent reading time. Students engage with digital books too. Indpendent reading builds stamina, fosters a love of reading, and gives students the opportunity to apply the strategies they’ve learned.
