Caring and Connectedness

This year, Sandy Hill students and staff are working on increasing student connectedness to school. One of the ways we are doing this is by having monthly assemblies where we focus on a character trait and then the following month, we recognize those students who have been nominated by their teacher for demonstrating that character trait in the last month. During the month of October we focused on Kindness and in November we will focus on Empathy. All students will have an opportunity to earn at least one brag tag during the school year.

Yukon Dan

On Tuesday October 24th and Wednesday October 25th, Grade 5 students (and Grade 4's in Divisions 2 and 3) participated in a hands on presentation from Yukon Dan. Yukon Dan is a professional gold panner who taught the students how to pan for gold and separate minerals with magnets.  He also brought with him his extensive collection of gold related items and treated students to engaging and educational interactive discussion about "gold fever" in British Columbia.

The students thoroughly enjoyed his presentation and even got to take home a small souvenir from Yukon Dan.

Fall Recess Fun

Students are enjoying the sunny fall weather at recess playing in the leaves. Their goal today was to fill the hockey net with leaves but the wind presented them with a challenge.

Please remember to dress for the weather as not all days are bright and sunny and students will still go outside in the rain.

Dodgeball!

The absolute best game in the universe especially when teaching noble minded player concepts. We are running some extra intramural dodgeball blocks for the older grades but all students have been playing during this gym unit. Next is volleyball!

Kindness Rock Garden

Students shared a beautiful conversation about kindness and created their own kindness rock for our KINDNESS ROCKS garden. The rocks were placed by the trees by the bus look. We stretched that kindness muscle by leaving behind something for someone else - even though we wanted to take our rocks home.

Students were encouraged to:

  1. add to the garden if they could
  2. take a rock if they were having a crummy day and needed some kindness
  3. share a rock with someone they they recognized as upset or needing some kindness in their day
