Grade 5 Indigenous Drums

The grade 5 Indigenous students went to   Mamele'awt Community Indigenous Centre for their transition to middle school with Mrs.Ellis. Each student made the drum by using Sinew, cedar frames and elk or deer skin . They also made an Indigenous design on their drums that represented who they are as a person from animals or other things from nature. They all worked extremely hard on their drums and are super proud of how they turned out.

Jungle Gym & Dance Party Results

Sandy Hill students are in "The Jungle" again during gym class. This week they are covering basic gymnastics and next week they start "ninja school." It seems fairly easy for them to self assess with a four out of four due to all the movement over and around the equipment. Fitness self assessment:

Celebrate Your Culture!

Last week was Celebrate Your Culture Day at Sandy Hill Elementary.  This provided staff and students an opportunity to learn about different cultures, appreciate diversity and to share their own cultural heritage and traditions. Discussions were had at home, cultural items were brought to school and special outfits were worn and there were even a few class parties and luncheons where food was shared.

Salmon Hatching in Division 18

Division 18 (Grade 1/2 French) is working in conjunction with Federal Fisheries and Oceans to have salmonids in the classroom. They began in January with about 50 Coho eggs, which are currently hatching. In one of the photos you can see an alevin lying on its side. They like to stick their heads in the gravel and you might see their tail waving. Their yolk sac is their food source for the next month. Then they will begin feeding them four times per day. Once they reach Fry size, about one inch, they will release them in early May to Stoney Creek.
